Thoroughbred
The Thouroughbred is a very important horse breed, which is respected throughout the world. Few breeds have had the influence this one has on equine history. The breed was developed on the early 17th century through the breeding of three foundation sires—the Godolphin Arabian, the Byerly Turk, and the Darley Arabian—and native English horses. A prominent participant in sport disciplines, the Thoroughbred first hit the scene as a racehorse. It shaped the sport so much that the royals and nobility became involved in it and racing was called the sport of kings. Full of speed and endurance, the Thoroughbred made a mark in other sports, too. It also excelled in jumping, dressage, hunting, and eventing. This remarkable breed has lent itself to the bloodlines of many other breeds, including the American Quarter Horse and European warmbloods. When it comes to appearance, it is available in all solid colors. It has an elegant look, made possible through its long legs and neck, and beautiful movements. With strong haunches, Thoroughbreds can move in a galloping stride over 20 feet long. They move at speeds that surpass 30 miles an hour. This breed measures in at about 15 to 17 hands high.
