The native horse breed of Mongolia, the Mongolian horse has unknown origins. Historical records show that the nomads of Central Asia were involved in horseback riding since 2000 BC. According to tests, of all horse breeds, the Mongolian horse has the largest genetic variety. This proves that it is a very ancient breed and has not gone through the human practice of selective breeding. This also shows that many other breeds descended from this one. According to sources, the breed remains mostly unchanged since the time of Genghis Khan. This horse lives outdoors in Mongolia throughout the entire year. It searches for food on its own and exists in harsh weather conditions. When it comes to appearance, the Mongolian horse is stocky. It has a large head and short legs. It somewhat resembles Przwelaski’s Horse. The mane and tail of this horse are rather long and are sometimes used for rope braiding or violin bows. Since this breed is accustomed to living free, only a few animals are caught for riding. It may seem uneasy around humans at first, but the Mongolian Horse grows to be friendly and calm in time. Besides riding, this horse is sometimes used for its meat. Further, the mare’s milk is an ingredient in the national beverage of Mongolia.
