The Marwari horse is also known as the Malani. It is an ancient breed from the region of Marwar in the Indian state of Rajasthan. This horse was the warrior mount for the Rathore rulers that lived in the region. Loved for its stamina, devotion, and courage, this horse was selectively bred since the beginning of the 12th century. The exact origins of the Marwari horse are unknown. According to some sources, it was developed as a warhorse. In 1193, the Rathores lost their power in the area and withdrew to faraway parts of western India. Their horses were very important there in the desert. They bred the horses to withstand desert conditions. They needed a courage, stamina, speed, and protective tendencies. For a long period of time, warriors were the only ones allowed to ride horses in the region. Thus, the numbers of Marwari horses dwindled. Restoration efforts, however, began in the early 1990s. Today, this horse is also used for sports, like polo, racing, and riding. It is also used as a police and army horse. An intelligent and attractive breed, the Marwari is a status symbol. With a silky coat and beautiful presence, this horse is often used in festivals and ceremonies in India.
