Hackney

The Hackney horse originated in Great Britain in the 1300s, when the King of England requested the breeding of horses that would be used for riding. The modern version of the horse developed in the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain. Today, the Hackney is a first cousin of the Thoroughbred. The main purpose behind the breeding of this breed is not riding any longer, but carriage driving. Known for endurance and fast trotting, this horse is also successful in harness, show jumping, and dressage, when it comes to competitive equestrian sports. It still makes a great riding horse. Concerning appearance, the Hackney is an attractive breed. Its coat comes in chestnut, brown, bay, and chestnut. Its coat often bears white markings—this is due to the sabino influence in the genes. Further, it has broad chest and powerful shoulders, as well as strong hindquarters and legs. Its face is well proportioned with its large eyes and defined ears. Its tail is set high and its back is sturdy and compact. This horse shoes well with its high knee movements and sound temperament. The foundation stock of the Hackney includes the Norfolk Trotter and Yorkshire Roadster.
