Horse Feeding

Horse feeding is an important concern for all horse owners. Since horses have short intestines and small stomachs, they cannot eat large quantities at any given time. Thus, they need to be fed frequently in small amounts-more than three times a day. Further, since horses cannot vomit, they need to pass all eaten items through the digestive system. This inability to vomit can be problematic, as a horse may eat nails or anything else. This is why horses are prone to colic and other health conditions concerning the digestive system.

For proper food and nutrition, a horse can eat hay, grain, oat, and feed mixtures. When it comes to hay, one pound per 100-pound horse is a good amount for proper food and nutrition. Therefore, a horse that weighs 1000 pounds can consume at least 10 pounds of hay. This amount will vary depending on the amount of work a horse does, and on the type of hay that it is fed. To promote healthy digestive systems, it is best to allow the horse to eat hay freely throughout the day. Concerning grain, a horse that works on a regular basis can eat five to ten pounds of the substance a day. A horse that is larger or that works harder should have more feed. A horse that is smaller or works less should have less feed. The quality of the grain should also be considered when determining the amount. Oats are the standard type or grain feed. They come rolled or tracked, in order to help with digestion. Corn is an ingredient that is commonly found in grain mixes, because it is a good source of fat and energy. If the feed does not contain salt, add one to two ounces of it. It is a necessity for horses. You can also give it to horses in block form. Make sure that the feed mix you provide your horse has a balanced amount of all nutrients. Remember to offer your horse a trace mineral block in the stall and pasture, to make sure that he or she is receiving the necessary nutrition. When it comes to water, make sure your horse drinks 5 to 15 gallons a day. A horse cannot drink cold water after a tough workout. The animal needs to cool down first.
