Horses communicate to us through their behavior. Their common behavior problems even communicate a message to us. A horse reacts to the saddling process by shaking their heads around, pinning their ears, or acting grumpy. They may want to tell you that the saddle is not fitting them properly, that they have wrinkles under their girth, that they are experiencing pain in their ribs or sternum, or that they have a sore back. Thus, pain may be the cause of bucking problems. The bit is another source of discomfort. Horses that are not comfortable with the bit may have issues concerning their mouths. They may chew continuously, open their mouths, throw their heads around, or try to pull the reins from your hands. Underlying causes of this may include mouth injuries or problems, a poor fitting saddle, dental problems, feet that are not in balance, and a bit that does not fit the horse's mouth correctly. Another common behavior problem concerns trouble picking up a lead, traveling downhill, or standing for grooming or medical purposes. A horse with these issues probably has not been taught correct behavior. There might be a problem with obedience and training. These issues may also signal a physical condition like arthritis or a sore back. Another behavior problem is rooted in worry. A horse that worries usually has a tense body, high head, and erect ears. Further, the animal seems disconnected mentally and tends to hold its breath. Examine what is around the horse that may be causing this reaction. When you are dealing with the common behavior issues, always check the physical well-being of the horse. Look at the fit of the saddle and bit, shoeing, hoof balance, problems with the teeth, back, and neck. A behavior problem may stem from discomfort and pain.
