The Shetland Sheepdog probably comes from the working Collies of Scotland. This breed was initially known as the Shetland Collie and worked as a herder on Scottish Islands. With long coats in black, blue merle, sable, and gold with white and tan, these dogs resemble miniature versions of Collies. Bred to be herding dogs, they have protective personalities. Thus, they are very loyal to their masters. Further, since they were bred to be solitary herders, they focus on one master. Nevertheless, Shetland Sheepdogs make great family pets. They will definitely come out of their shells once they feel loved. These dogs are intelligent and can read the emotions of their families. They make great workers, guards, and hiking companions. They are quick and capable. Timid around strangers, dogs of this breed need proper socialization and training from a young age. Since they need a lot of physical activity, city or apartment living would not be comfortable for them. They would do well with a fenced yard. When it comes to health conditions, the Shetland Sheepdog may develop hyperthyroidism, eye problems, as well as overheating. Concerning grooming, it needs daily brushing and professional care. This breed is heavy on the shedding.
