The Rottweiler probably comes from a line of drover dogs (similar to Mastiffs) of ancient Rome. Named after the German town of Rottweil, where dogs of this breed herded cattle for centuries, Rottweilers lost their popularity in the 19th century when cattle driving was outlawed in the region. These dogs made a comeback in the 1900s when they became popular as police dogs. They are working dogs and house pets today. With powerful and sturdy bodies, these dogs have glossy coats in black with patches of rust color. They are known for their courage, intelligence, and self-confidence. They need proper socialization and training to help them deal with their high energy levels. A very active breed, the Rottweiler enjoys being outdoors and running, hiking, or playing. The breed loves to receive attention and thrives on companionship. If bored or mistreated, it can get destructive. A content dog does well with children and makes a great watchdog. The breed needs a firm owner who can handle a challenge. When it comes to health conditions, the Rottweiler is prone to developing eye ailments and hip dysplasia. Concerning grooming, this breed it easy to maintain.
