The Puli is probably a derivative of the Tibetan Terrier. It appeared over a thousand years ago when the Magyars moved to Hungary with three kinds of sheepdogs: the Kuvasz, Komondor, and Puli, which was used to herd the flock. With shaggy coats that come in black, white, and gray, Puliks make great pets. They love family life and affection. This intelligent breed is receptive to training, but sometimes has an independent streak. However, with firm and consistent training, the Puli does very well. It is protective of its family and suspicious of strangers. Thus, it makes a good guard dog. Since it is a rather active dog that needs space, it is not suited for apartment or city living. It does better when it has a spacious yard. When it comes to health issues, the Puli is prone to developing hip dysplasia, as well as hearing and eye problems. Concerning grooming, this breed requires a lot of care. When it is about nine months old, the Puli develops cords that need to be separated to prevent matting. A matted coat looks unappealing and it can harm the dog’s skin. The cords need regular checking. Bathing the dog is not a problem, but drying may take 24 hours.
