Hailing from the Portuguese coast, the Portuguese Water Dog was a fisherman’s companion. It helped carry tackle and haul nets, among other duties. The origin of this breed is unknown, but some sources say that these dogs are descendents of the ancient Asian herding dogs that entered the country with traders. With wavy or curly coats, these sturdy dogs are available in white, black, brown, or in tri-color combinations. Portuguese Water Dogs are hard workers and gentle house pets. This is the way they were centuries ago, and how they are now. They can work all day and come home to play with children. At home, they are relaxed, playful, and silly at times. Many people compare Portuguese Water Dogs to Poodles, as they are intelligent and active. They are very loyal to their homes and families and make excellent guard dogs. When it comes to health conditions, this breed is prone to developing cataracts and other eye ailments, as well as hip dysplasia. Concerning grooming, the Portuguese Water Dog would benefit from brushing on a regular basis, as well as occasional clipping. This breed does not shed much.
