According to most sources, the Pointer is the result of the mid-17th century crossing of several Greyhounds, Foxhounds, Bloodhounds, and Setters. With athletic bodies and smooth and glossy coats of black, liver, orange, or yellow (with or without patches of white), these dogs were developed to stop when it detected game and point in the right direction. As sporty as they may be, they make great house pets. Pointers are very loyal to their families. Further, they are clean and well mannered. These playful and patient dogs make great companions for children. Even though, the intelligent Pointer is happy when it is with its family, it does need plenty of outdoor time. In order to stay happy and healthy (both physically and mentally), it needs exercise in the form of daily walks, runs, and tasks. This dog makes the ideal jogging partner. It can go on forever. When it comes to health issues, this breed is prone to developing skin allergies, epilepsy, and hip dysplasia. In terms of grooming, the Pointer needs weekly brushing. It is also advised to check its ears for infections on a regular basis.
