Among the oldest domesticated dog breed, the Pharaoh Hound comes from ancient Egypt. The origin of this dog goes back to 3,000 BC. Traders eventually took it to Malta, where it was bred to hunt small game. With slender bodies covered with glossy and smooth coats in shades of red and tan, these dogs have flesh-colored noses that turn red when they blush. Blushing in the Pharaoh Hound is a sign of happiness. Their long ears also turn red. These sleek and attractive dogs make great pets. They have balanced personalities. They are playful and loving, but they are not overly excitable and needy. This said, they do need attention and do not like being left alone for long periods. Dogs of this breed are somewhat reserved around strangers, but they do love children. In general, Pharaoh Hounds do not make the best guard dogs. Concerning physical activity, they need their share. This breed needs vigorous walks on a daily basis. It will be fine living in an apartment as long as it gets its exercise. Concerning health conditions, they are not prone to any major genetic disorders. When it comes to grooming, an occasional coat brushing would do. A clean dog, the Pharaoh Hound does shed.
