The history of the Pekingese breed goes back to 8th century China, when these dogs were cherished pets in the court of the Tang Dynasty emperor. Back then, the Pekingese were called Fu Lin, which is translated into the Lion Dogs of China. It was not until 1860 when they entered Europe, due to the invasion by British troops who took some of these dogs to the royals across the region. With flowing hair and heart-shaped ears, these dogs come in a variety of colors. They carry themselves like lions—proud and dignified. As pets, they are loving and sensitive. They crave attention and get jealous if their owners’ affection goes elsewhere. They enjoy sitting in laps and wandering around the home. Pekingese have a tendency to challenge bigger dogs. They are rather opinionated and will refuse food and games at times. They also have a tendency to bark often and need training to curb this impulse. When it comes to living arrangements, they would do well in apartments or larger homes. These dogs are not particularly fond of exercise like some other breeds. Thus, they tend to gain weight rapidly. When it comes to health issues, Pekingese can suffer from eye problems, pinched nostrils, and heatstroke. Concerning grooming, professional care would work well.
