The vibrant and cheerful Papillon was originally known as a dwarf spaniel. For many centuries, it was popular with the European royalty and nobility. When the breed developed erect ears shaped like butterfly wings, the name Papillon (French for butterfly) came into use. Dogs with flat ears are known as Phalenes and are considered a distinct breed, even though they may be found with Papillons in the same litter. Nevertheless, Papillons are popular as pets and rat hunters. With silky coats and plumed tails, these dogs are usually white and other colors. They have a vibrant personality. When it comes to their families, they are very loyal and love to cuddle. These affectionate and clean dogs would be fine living in small or big spaces. This breed might not require much exercise—a daily walk would do, but it is definitely not lazy. The Papillon spends a good amount of time romping about. An intelligent breed, it is receptive to training. When it comes to new guests entering the house, this dog may bark at first, but it will eventually open up and provide entertainment. Health issues that may affect Papillons include joint and kneecap issues. In terms of grooming, they need to be brushed on a regular basis. More care is required during shedding seasons.
