According to some sources, the Old English Sheepdog originally came about in England as a mix of a variety of dogs and the Bearded Collie. According to other sources, it is a descendent of the Russian Owtchar. Regardless of the details, the Old English Sheepdog was a hard-working herding breed when it first came into existence in the early 19th century. With shaggy coats in gray, blue, blue merle, or blue gray that might come with white patches, these dogs are loyal companions. They thrive when they receive attention and love, but they also need personal space, as they can be introverts at times. Old English Sheepdogs love hanging around in the house. They do well with kids, as they are gentle and patient. When they detect suspicious activity around their homes, they bark. Thus, they make good watchdogs. When it comes to activity, this breed needs daily walks, as well as opportunities to run in open spaces. The Old English Sheepdog needs its space and will do better in a larger home with a yard than in an apartment. When it comes to health conditions, this breed may develop cataracts, thyroid issues, obesity, and hip dysplasia. Concerning grooming, regular brushing will prevent mats.
