With a history that goes back 3,000 years, Maltese are among the oldest dog breeds of the world. Greeks built special tombs for these dogs. Roman poets wrote about them. This breed was a favorite among royals and aristocrats. They made their first American appearance at Westminster's show in 1877. With long white or off-white hair, these dogs are gentle and well behaved. They love receiving and giving affection and take great joy in cuddling. As obedient as they may be, Maltese also love displaying their tireless energy as they run around. This breed loves playtime. They get along well with children of all ages, but prefer older ones. The polite Maltese expects respect, and so, younger children who might not understand the concept of space may irritate this breed. Around other dogs, they are self-assured and comfortable. When it comes to living quarters, these dogs prefer small spaces and yards. Thus, they make good pets for people who live in the city. In terms of exercise, all they need is a 20-30 minute walk a day. Concerning health issues, Maltese are prone to dental ailments. Therefore, providing them with biscuits and toys that prevent dental problems can be helpful. Concerning grooming, they need daily brushing.
