Even though this breed received the name “Labrador” in 1887 by an English earl and hunter, it originated in the 18th century in Canada. The Labrador Retriever has its roots in the Lesser Newfoundland dog, which emerged from the St. John’s Water Dog. Its task was to retrieve fishermen’s nets from the sea. This dog found its way to England where they became popular as hunters and retrievers. A very popular and loved breed, the Labrador Retriever is available in three colors: black, yellow, and chocolate. With friendly eyes and a short coat, this breed has webbed feet which allows them to be great swimmers. By nature, these dogs are people lovers. A pleasant companion around the house and compatible with kids and other pets, the Labrador Retriever does not make the best watchdog as it is rather friendly with everyone who enters the home. This dog is intelligent and easy to train. It thrives when it gets enough physical activity, including playing fetch, hiking, and jogging. It can live in an apartment as long as it gets its exercise. A Labrador Retriever would do better, however, in a house with a yard. When it comes to health, this breed is prone to elbow and hip dysplasia, eye ailments, and ear infections. This breed tends to gain weight quickly.
