Historical sources point to the existence of the Greyhound in ancient times. This breed is depicted in the ancient artifacts of Egypt and the writings of Ovid, the Roman poet. Records also show that breeders in England developed this breed into a hunter of foxes, rabbits, and deer in the 9th century. Greyhounds finally entered the United States in the 16th century by Spanish explorers. With sleek bodies, these graceful dogs have narrow heads and short coats in various colors. They are calm and gentle dogs. At home, they are comfortable and appreciate companionship. They love hanging out with their family members and can tolerate long hours indoors—as long as their families are around. Greyhounds do not do well with loneliness. Companionship is important to these dogs. They do well with houseguests, but do not get excited like some other dog breeds. Thus, they do not make ideal watchdogs. The most popular characteristic of this breed is speed. Known to love running, the Greyhound would appreciate a large yard, as well as daily walks and jogs. When it comes to health, this breed is susceptible to bloat. Because of its short coat, grooming is rather simple.
