Experts believe that the Great Pyrenees came from Asia and settled in the Pyrenees Mountain region between Spain and France in 1800 BC. With a keen sense of smell and a sharp intellect, they succeeded as sheep guards and herders on rough terrain. They later worked as farm dogs, as well. With large bodies covered in white coats, Great Pyrenees are handsome and loyal dogs. They are blessed with an understanding of humans. According to experts, this may be because they were alone with shepherds in remote mountains for centuries. They are very receptive to instructions and easy to train. At home, these dogs do well with all members of the family, including kids and other pets. They also get along with family friends guests. A breed with a positive personality, the Great Pyrenees craves positive feedback and does not respond to anger. This breed makes a great watchdog and is very protective of its family. Genetically inclined to live in cold climates, it needs a lot of water and shade when the weather gets hot. When it comes to health conditions, this dog may suffer from hip dysplasia and skin and skeletal issues. The shedding Great Pyrenees needs daily coat brushing.
