The Glen of Imaal Terrier gets its name from a valley in Ireland. This dog was bred as a hunter of foxes and rats. This explains its low and agile frame. While these dogs are still rather uncommon in the United States, they are beloved house pets in Europe. With domed heads and a coat of medium-length, the Glen of Imaal Terrier comes in wheat, blue, or brindle. It makes a great companion to all kinds of people from retirees to families with kids. Easygoing and calm around the house, these dogs are very energetic outdoors. They enjoy being part of all family events and activities. Even though they do very well with kids, they might be feisty around other dogs. They are not barkers, and would do well with apartment living. When it comes to health conditions, Glen of Imaal Terriers are prone to hip dysplasia, skin irritations, and eye ailments, including progressive retinal atrophy. Concerning grooming practices, they need to be rushed about twice a week to prevent matting. They also need to be stripped several times a year. This is a usually done by a professional groomer, but it can also be done at home (with adequate instructions).
