The origin of the Dalmatian is not known. These energetic dogs have taken on various tasks in ancient Egypt and the modern-day world. They have assumed the roles of guard, police, military, and bird dogs, as well as circus performers, retrievers, and firehouse mascots. In the 19th century they became very popular as coach dogs that followed and guarded horse-drawn carriages. With white bodies covered with black spots, Dalmatians are lean and muscular dogs with smooth coats. When born, they are completely white. They develop their famous spots as they get older. Because of their impressive stamina, these dogs make excellent companions to the jogger and runner. They also do well on farms with horses. Since they have a very lively side, they are better for households with older kids, if any. These dogs may overwhelm younger kids. Dalmatians, however, love people. They need a lot of attention and exercise. Since these dogs like to wander and explore, their yard should be properly secured. Even though they do not have long hair, they do shed heavily during the spring and fall seasons. Brushing them during these times would help. When it comes to health problems, a Dalmatian is prone to deafness, bladder stones, and skin allergies.
