Developed from a strain of the Skye Terrier, the Cairn Terrier is a hunting dog by nature. It got its name from the stone piles called cairns that were used to mark property lines in the highlands of Western Scotland where the dog originated. Throughout history, this dog was used to track foxes and other small animals. Perhaps the most famous dog of this breed is Toto from The Wizard of Oz. With bushy eyebrows and heads, the Cairn Terrier has a shaggy coat that comes in different colors. They make fun pets, but do not necessarily care for cuddling. They would rather run around and dig. With curious personalities, they love to explore their surroundings and chase little critters while outdoors. At home, these dogs are protective of their families. They also tend to compete for attention when others their owners are with other people. If a stranger approaches the house, this dog will bark incessantly. Thus, the Cairn Terrier makes a great watchdog. A sharp learner, this breed does well with training. A lover of competition, it thrives when challenged with games. Health problems that may affect a Cairn Terrier include hip dysplasia, allergies, and cataracts.
