A mix of German Mastiffs and English Bulldogs, the Boxer originated in Germany in the 19th century. It was initially used as a working, hunting, and fighting dog. It later became used as a cattle and circus dog, as well. After World War II, this breed became popular in the united States as American soldiers took them home with them. With a square-shaped, muscular body, the Boxer has a chiseled head and wide nostrils. It is covered with a tight coat in brown, beige, or red with white markings. Tough and strong on the outside, these dogs are playful and affectionate on the inside. They do well with all family members, including kids and pets. This dog is known to use its paws in a boxing-like motion—whether to wave you down or play with a toy. It also likes to carry objects around. Boxers love attention. They need playtime, games, and walks to keep them happy and healthy. Protective of their homes and families, they make great watchdogs. The ideal owner for this breed is one that leads an active lifestyle and is firm toward the dog, as the Boxer may try to dominate. Health problems that may affect this dog include hip dysplasia, skin allergies, and heart issues.
