The Beagle probably came about in 18th century England as a mix of different hunting hounds. Known to be excellent hunting and sporting dogs, as well as pets, Beagles have a muscular body, hanging ears, and irresistible brown eyes. Their coat can come in different tricolor combinations of red, white, tan, yellow, black, and orange, but the tricolor white, tan, and black coat is the most popular variety. Energetic dogs, they love playing and feeling like they belong in a family. They do very well with kids and do not like to be alone. These dogs are happy and spirited. Even though they would enjoy having another Beagle around, they do not always do well with other
dog breeds. They are protective of their homes and families, but do not show aggression toward strangers. They simply bark at strangers; thus, they make great watchdogs. Besides barking, they "talk" by baying, or making gurgling sounds. Even though they might be difficult to train (because of their stubbornness), they do respond to a firm owner with treats—they love food. Concerning
grooming, their ears need special care. Health problems that may affect a Beagle include ear infections, dwarfism, epilepsy, and eye ailments.
