Contrary to what most people think when they hear the name of this dog breed, the Australian Shepherd did not originate in Australia. The origins of the dog are rooted in the Basque area between France and Spain. The dog was known as a working dog adept in herding sheep. Since many of the shepherds of the Basque region came from Australia, it is believed that that is why the dog got its name. With almond-shaped eyes that come in brown, amber, or blue, these dogs have soft hair in the shape of a mane around their heads. Their coats are somewhat textured and come in black, red or blue merle, red and white with possible tan markings. Strong framed but easy going, Australian Shepherds make excellent pets. They are playful and great with kids. It seems like they never get over their puppy stage. They love playing and working. Thus, they need physical and mental exercise. Even though they might seem reserved at first, with time they will accept new people. However, they are protective of their families and homes. Therefore, they make great watchdogs. Health issues that may affect an Australian Shepherd include hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and cataracts.
