Fleas and ticks are parasites that affect all dog breeds. These creatures can live off the skin and blood of dogs. If your dog itches a spot continuously or starts pulling hair out, it may have fleas and ticks. It may get a hot spot because of the itching.

Fleas affect the skin. Fleas do not transmit diseases from dog to dog or human. They do, however, cause great irritation to the dog and to the humans around the dog. The flea lays eggs in bedding grass, carpeting, and anywhere the dog goes. These eggs, which can reach thousands in number, hatch in around ten days. When a flea successfully does this, you do not only need to deflea your dog, but also the areas around your dog. Luckily, you can treat your dog with a flea preventative, in order to kill flea eggs. You can buy such a product at your veterinarian's office or at a dog supply store.

Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of hosts. They are usually found in wooded areas and beaches. Dogs that frequent visit these locations may be at a risk. These parasites are attracted to warmth and motion, and that is why they seek mammals like dogs. Ticks attach their mouthparts into the skin of hosts. They consume blood. They do not detach until their meals are sufficient-this may take hours or days. When it comes to dogs, ticks attach themselves around the ears, insides of the legs, between the toes, and in skin folds. Ticks need to be removed from the dog with tweezers. When removing a tick, make sure you wear gloves as the blood of a tick can bear organisms that can infect humans with disease. Ticks may cause anemia or paralysis. Luckily, some parasite preventatives also help protect dogs from ticks.
