Even though experts do not know exactly when the Somali came into existence, they conclude that the breed is the result of the post-World War II mating between longhaired cats and Abyssinians. During that period, there were only around twelve surviving Abyssinians. Therefore, cat breeders in the US started breeding the Somalis. A popular breed today, it is often called the longhaired Abyssinian. With tufts of fur around its neck, this cat has a bushy tail and fox-like coloring. It also has an M-shaped mark on its forehead. Its eyes are black-lined. Even though it has a long coat, it is not much of a shedder. Further, its coat is not prone to matting. In terms of grooming, weekly brushing would suffice. When it comes to personality, the Somali is energetic and fun. This cat has a sense of humor and keeps all family members entertained. It knows how to use its paws to open cabinets. An intelligent cat, it responds to training as long as it is positive. It does not respond well to punishment. It does well with kids, other pets, and guests in the house. When it comes to health issues, Somalis are prone to developing dental conditions like gingivitis.
