Hailing from Norway, the Norwegian Forest Cat was originally known as Skogkatter in its native home. This cat kept the Vikings company during their travels. Because of the cold climate of Europe, where it grew, it has a thick double coat that keeps it warm. Despite a two to three decade period when it almost disappeared, the breed made a comeback in the 1970s. With a triangular head and eyes that come in gold, copper, or green, the fluffy Norwegian Forest Cat is a heavy shedder. Its coat comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Its body is rather large. When it comes to personality, this cat breed is patient and friendly. It loves its family, but also does well with being alone for short periods. It does well with other pets and kids. This intelligent cat loves climbing and adapts well to changes in its environment. It loves perching on a cat tree or high place. Norwegian Forest Cats may have thick coats, but they do not require constant grooming like other breeds with long hair. A weekly brushing would suffice. Brushing more frequently during the spring season would help keep the home neat. Concerning health, this breed may suffer from polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
