American Shorthair

The American Shorthair dates back to the Mayflower. It accompanied English colonists during their travel. This cat was helpful in ensuring that the rat and mice population of the ship was kept to a minimum. When the settlers arrived in America, the American Shorthairs kept them company. In the early 1900s, cats from other countries entered the United States and mixed with the resident cats. Breeders were concerned about this, as they wanted to save the original American cat. Thus, they took the cats that displayed the original characteristics of the American Shorthair and started breeding them. Available in over eighty different colors and patterns, like calico and tabby, American Shorthairs are gentle and quiet. These cats are known for their long life spans. They enjoy their families and do well with kids. They also do well with dogs. This breed thoroughly enjoys playing—with humans or toys. It is a great family cat. It also appreciates its independence and space. The American Shorthair is fine if it is left alone. It is not needy like some other breeds. When it comes to grooming, it is not demanding. It only needs a weekly brushing.
