If you are thinking about getting a purebred dog and if buying from a breeder appeals to you, then make sure you find a reputable one. Do your research, as many illegitimate backyard breeders and puppy mills are around; they carry on unhealthy and inhumane breeding practices that result in an overabundance of unhealthy dogs. Thus, they must be stopped. Responsible breeders, however, support the betterment of the dog breeds they work with. They focus on breeding healthy dogs with the proper temperament for their breed.

Get information from your vet and other dog owners. Ask for recommendations and references, or get a referral from a rescue organization that is recommended by a national kennel club, such as the AKC Breeder Referral Contacts. A good breeder would be open to show you the premises and tell you about the lineage of the dog. Further, when you are visiting the breeder's home or kennel, make sure that it is clean. Further, look at the adult dogs and puppies at the site. They should look healthy and full of life. During your visit, ask to see one of the parents of the puppy that interests you. If you are uncomfortable with the breeder or his or her practices, do not make a purchase. Buying from a breeder should be a comfortable affair.
